Renault road trip from Ibiza to Mongolia

Ibiza / Prague / Mongolia – Four young men from Ibiza set out for Prague and Mongolia in their 16-year-old Renault van. The “Mongol Rally” sees a good 30,000 kilometers of road ahead of them.

“The Sabina Boys”, as they call themselves, want to draw attention to the forest reforestation initiative “Ibiza Conciencia”. The purpose of the adventure trip is to show solutions to the problem of forest fires on their home island.

The team consists of Jose Fernandez (hotel manager), Guillaume Desager (architect), Patrick Nagel (entrepreneur and cook) and Andres Garcia (founder of the MGAG architecture office). All four were born and raised in Ibiza and had been toying with the idea of participating in the Mongol Rally for a long time.

In 2004 the race took place for the first time with six teams, of which only four reached the goal. It is a charity race in which now more than 400 international teams compete. It starts in the Czech Republic.

The rules for the trip

The rules are simple: the vehicle must not have an engine of more than 1.2 liters and it must be older than ten years. SUVs or vans are not permitted. There are no rescue teams or roadside assistance and the use of GPS is frowned upon. The pilots should use classic paper maps.

The four boys’ Renault Kangoo already has a few kilometers and stories under their belt, “but is ready to endure many more,” they say confidently. After all, the goal is not to arrive first, “but to arrive.”
