EU funding offers fibre optic internet for 99.64 percent of households

In 2020, the government of the Balearic islands promises that almost 100 percent of all households in the islands will have access to broadband internet.

Grants from the Balear Government

In the fourth quarter of 2018, the Govern Balear granted telephone service providers 2.8 million euro for the expansion of their fiber optic network. The aid is financed from funds from the European program “FEDER 2014-2020” (Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional). This program is intended to strengthen the socio-economic network in Europe and, among other things, to fill supply gaps in telecommunications.

Benefits for following areas

The following areas of the Pityuses will especially benefit from this: Cap de Barbaria, San Mateo, Santa Agnes, Es Cubells, San Lorenzo, San Vicente and Cala San Vicente, San Miguel and Port de San Miguel. From 2020, the Balearic Islands will be the most extensive autonomous region in Spain, along with the Basque Country, to be covered by high-speed internet. According to a spokesperson, the goal is to supply 99.64 percent of all households.
