First dolphin hydrophones attached to Es Vedrá

“Big acoustic spying”

“Big acoustic spying” on the dolphins around the Pityuses started recently. First hydrophones were installed on Es Vedrá, Es Vedranell, on the Illots de Ponents and Es Freus and in the north of the island.

As part of the “Nuestros Delfines” project, hydrophones are being installed at various locations to trace the way of life of these cute animals. The study of the marine biologists behind the project is primarily intended to shed more light on the effects of underwater disturbances such as ship noise on the behavior of the dolphins.

The technical part of the project

The Tursiops Association is responsible for the technical management of the project. The “Fundación para la Conservación de Ibiza” and a private donor paid for the installation of the first two hydrophones. Tursiops employees will collect data over a period of twelve months with the first inspection and reading of the devices planned for April.
